Hi Matt - thanks for letting us get to know a bit more about you! Let's get started:
1. What’s your role at Mediacurrent, both internally and client-related?
I am a Lead Drupal Architect, which means I do a lot of requirements gathering, discovery, and planning out large scale builds, and then I help lead development teams in executing those builds.
2. Give us an idea of what professional path brought you here.
The first paid web development job I ever had was contracting for the Carter Center in Atlanta, former President Carter’s organization. I started as an intern in the human rights office there and helped build their Human Rights Defenders site, and when my internship ended they contracted with me for a year. After that, I moved from Atlanta to Asheville, NC and continued to freelance and contract with various Drupal shops until I took a full time job with Mediacurrent.
3. How did you first get involved with Drupal?
I first discovered Drupal in college, I believe the year was 2003. I was involved in a lot of student activism, and worked with numerous student groups on my campus. Each student group needed their own website, and I was looking for a tool to help me quickly recreate the basic functionality they all wanted, like events calendars, image galleries, blogs, etc. I surveyed the CMS landscape at the time and found Drupal, and I never looked back.
4. Is there a go-to Drupal module that you like to incorporate whenever possible?
As an enthusiast of decoupled architectures, I’m a big fan of modules like GraphQL, Waterwheel, JSON API, and of course the one I’ve been working on, Decoupled Blocks.
5. Do you have any recommended reading or books that you would suggest to others?
Lately I’ve been reading a lot of autobiographies. Steve Martins’ Born Standing Up is one of my favorites.
6. Any mobile apps that you use regularly?
I’m addicted to the Reddit app, but I’m not sure I’d recommend that to anyone else.
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I try to stay involved in outdoorsy things - hiking, disc golfing, biking, and paddleboarding. But just as often hanging out at home playing video games or watching movies is where I end up.
8. What do you like about Mediacurrent?
Mediacurrent does a great job of hiring very genuine and down to earth people. It is always great to work with talented people, and when they are also easy to get along with you know you’ve found a special place.
Awesome, thanks for being apart of the Employee Spotlight series!
