Each month, we spotlight one of our amazing team members who work hard to bring you great work. Today, we interviewed Edward Chan who is a Senior Drupal Developer that has been with Mediacurrent for over 2 years! Let's get started!
1. What’s your role at Mediacurrent, both internally and client-related?
I am a Senior Drupal Developer at Mediacurrent. Internally, a typical workday involves coding, addressing fires/issues, and contributing back to the Drupal community when I can. Additionally, I am involved with sprint planning, ticket grooming, and making sure clients are in-the-loop with status and progress updates to ensure a successful project.
2. Give us an idea of what professional path brought you here.
During my early college days, I was looking to major in accounting or economics. However, as time went by and courses were taken, I realized that I wanted something more exciting and challenging - which lead me to study Computer Science. I was intrigued by how the internet works and it kept me curious all along the way - even until today. I enjoyed the rewarding feeling of solving complex problems and continuous learning.
After college, I started working as an in-house developer before moving onto working in agencies. I enjoy the fast-paced environment of the agency life and working on a different project every few months kept things fresh for me.
3. How did you first get involved with Drupal?
I was first exposed to Drupal at my first job out of college at an American history non-profit organization in 2012. Their website had just been revamped and running Drupal 6. It was my (then) manager and I who were responsible for all IT operations including website maintenance. I started with site building, familiarizing myself with the Drupal architecture, before slowly making my way into custom module development and theming.
4. Is there a go-to Drupal module that you like to incorporate whenever possible?
The YAML Content module maintained by Mediacurrent’s own Stephen Lucero is definitely on the top of the list whenever possible. This module allows easy and flexible generation of demo content using YAML files and allows us to demonstrate site progress to clients with real content without the tediousness of creating them manually.
5. Do you have any recommended reading or books that you would suggest to others?
The Intelligent Investor - Benjamin Graham
The 4-Hour Workweek - Tim Ferriss
The Leading Brain: Neuroscience Hacks to Work Smarter, Better, Happier - Friederike Fabritius
6. Any mobile apps that you use regularly?
I use the Reddit app the most. The runner-up would be the Delta app for tracking cryptocurrencies.
7. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to eat, so I go out to try out new restaurants very often. I also like to find new places to travel to that more suburban - to get away from the hustle and bustle that is NYC.
8. What do you like about Mediacurrent?
Definitely the people and the culture. Everyone at Mediacurrent is approachable and some of the smartest people I know. Another thing I love is that Mediacurrent cares about their employees and provides so many opportunities to further my career.
