Employee Spotlight: Clair Smith

by Mallory Strange
December 18, 2018

Each month, we spotlight one of our amazing team members who work hard to bring you great work. Today, we interviewed Senior Front End Developer, Clair Smith who has been with Mediacurrent for 2 and a half years! Let's get started!

Clair Headshot

1. What’s your role at Mediacurrent, both internally and client-related?

I am a senior frontend developer in my second year at Mediacurrent. I like to think of myself as a link between the data and the design that engages users to interact with and enjoy the website. Internally, I am a team leader for Fullstak Flapjak, a team consisting of both front and backend developers, and just a great group of people, and a mentor to recently hired frontend developer Brooklyn Moor.

2. Give us an idea of what professional path brought you here.

I was never really sure what I wanted to do, but when the recession hit I was completely at a loss. I decided to go back to school and got an associates degree in Information Management in 2011. I took a job working as a Wordpress developer for a boutique marketing firm in upstate New York shortly after and fell in love with the internet. I worked as a full-stack developer in Wordpress and Drupal for a few years but discovered my passion was for the front end. Getting the job at Mediacurrent was amazing because I could focus on the part of my job I enjoyed the most and was encouraged to learn new things and get involved in the community.

3. How did you first get involved with Drupal?

I had experimented with Drupal myself while I was just starting out in the industry, but didn’t really work with it until I accepted a position with an agency in NYC that made websites for enterprise clients.

4. Do you have any recommended reading or books that you would suggest to others?

I loved the “You Don’t Know JS” series by Kyle Simpson and CSS: The Missing Manual by David McFarland

5. Any mobile apps that you use regularly?
The basics, obviously, but my favorites are Medium and Flipboard, because I can create and curate a good mix of technology, design and regular news.

6. What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love to read, I’ll read anything. I’m usually working through a few books at a time. I’m also fascinated with physics and astronomy. I think if I could do anything I’d go back to school to be an astrophysicist.

7. What do you like about Mediacurrent?

The atmosphere and culture are phenomenal. Since we are so distributed, everybody works really hard to be social which makes us feel like a family. It’s also incredible to work for a company that encourages professional growth for its own sake, and not just as a tool to drive sales.
