My (Drupal) Google Summer of Code Experience

The Micropublisher

This summer I was a mentor for the Google Summer of Code program for Drupal. I maintain the Facebook-style Statuses module, which allows users to have a stream of “status updates” on their user profiles and to write messages on other users’ profiles, like Facebook. So when I had the chance to mentor the Facebook-style Micropublisher proposal, which built on Facebook-style Statuses to allow attaching images, links, and video to status updates, I jumped on it.

The result was a resounding success, and I learned a lot during the process. Nitin Gupta, the student driving the project (and better known to some as publicmind) was an extraordinary developer in the true Drupal spirit. He gracefully put up with my pickiness about coding style, thoroughly researched the best code architecture for our purposes, and even identified places where Facebook-style Statuses itself could become more flexible. I truly believe that Nitin will remain committed to the module he created, and that both of us are better Drupal developers as a result of this process. read more »

Drupalcamp Atlanta 2009 Announcement: Video Coverage of 20 Sessions Now Available!

One of the over-riding goals of the Drupalcamp Atlanta organizers was to provide as much video footage of the event as possible in order to share back to the community at large. We also heard from a lot of people that had a conflict of interest with the date, were turned away by the weather, or may have attended, and wanted to see two or more sessions that overlapped.

Thanks to some Herculean efforts by folks like Atlanta Drupal User Group members Utzu Logigan and David Fugate our vision is nearing a reality. The video crew has been meticulously editing and processing a lot of footage the last few weeks. We are proud to release 20 videos, and still have several more left to complete – I am told the remaining coverage should be done within a few weeks. read more »

Why the Marketing of Drupal is Critical

There was some little reported financial news that came out of Wall Street last month that did not make much traction in the Drupalsphere, but it should – particularly to our partner Acquia and those of us in the open source world. The news was that the darling of commercial open-source business models, Red-Hat, reported that business is good, very good, despite the global economic recession. To capsulate, Red-Hat revenue was up 11%, earnings up 25% share, and the stock price over 45% this year. You see Acquia has long asserted that they aspire to be to Drupal what Red Hat has become to Linux. read more »
