Magic Johnson's new network ASPiRE launches on Drupal
ASPiRE, the new television network from Magic Johnson Enterprises, launched in June on Comcast and Time Warner Cable in approximately seven million homes. The network also launched its new web site, www.aspire.tv, on Drupal.
Spearheaded by entrepreneur and NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, in partnership with gmc TV, ASPiRE delivers enlightening, entertaining and positive programming to African-American families that includes movies, documentaries, short films, music, comedy, visual and performing arts, and faith and inspirational programs. The network’s new Drupal 7 web site stood up to a launch-day marketing blitz that included promotional appearances by Magic Johnson on the Today Show, CNN and MSNBC.
gmc TV turned to Mediacurrent to extend the Drupal foundation built in 2010 for watchgmctv.com to power ASPiRE’s new web site.
"When Earvin 'Magic' Johnson teamed up with gmc TV for the launch of his new network, ASPiRE, we needed a high quality network web site that could meet both tight deadlines and high standards," said Philip Manwaring, SVP Strategic Planning, Research, and Technology for gmc. "Having worked with Mediacurrent for two years now, the choice of partner was an easy one. Once again, Mediacurrent did not let us down and delivered a site worthy of the unique and inspiring brand that Mr. Johnson envisioned. The site launched on time and to a very positive reception from key stakeholders. Not only does it look good, but manageability and workflow are all first rate – a critical concern for our online team when taking on a new site of this complexity. Overall I could not be more pleased Mediacurrent’s professionalism and partnership driven approach and look forward to continued work together as we move ahead.”
By leveraging the strengths of contributed Drupal modules such as Feeds to power the site’s programming schedule and the contributed responsive base theme Omega, Mediacurrent was able to efficiently deliver a site that appears highly customized under a very tight timeline. The project was also rewarding to the team, for the positive message the network and web site hopes to provide.
“It has been a long-held dream of mine to launch a television network that offers viewers inspiring and positive portrayals of African-American lifestyles, accomplishments and talent, while also creating opportunities for the next generation of artists and storytellers,” said ASPiRE Chairman and CEO Earvin “Magic” Johnson. “My vision for ASPiRE could only become a reality with a group of visionaries and bold charter brand partners, The Chrysler Group, L’Oréal USA, Nationwide Insurance, Coca-Cola and Walmart. I am thrilled to have GMC TV as my partner along with our affiliate partners Comcast, Time Warner Cable and FAVE TV to help make this dream come true."
gmc will provide operational support for ASPiRE, including affiliate and advertising sales, marketing, programming, production and technical operations. Charles Humbard, gmc President and CEO, said: “We are delighted to be partnered with Earvin Johnson in the creation of this new network. Between his inspired leadership and our day-to-day operational experience in programming for, and marketing to, African-American audiences, our two brands are a perfect fit.”
ASPiRE expects to be available in over 12 million homes by the end of 2012 and in 20 to 30 million homes by the end of 2013.
