Drupal Commons is a Drupal distribution billed as “social business software.” That means that Acquia is distributing Drupal bundled with some other modules preconfigured to work as a company’s interactive user-facing website. Drupal Commons 1.0 was released on August 5th.
The Purpose of Drupal Commons

I got involved with Drupal in 2007 when I decided I wanted to build an online community of young people interested in politics in order to encourage their interest and activism. I was in way over my head; I had dabbled with a number of desktop programming languages, but I had never built a website. I got my first hosting account on my dad's recommendation, and it came with an installer for a large number of open-source software in a variety of categories.

This past weekend I gave a presentation on Social Networking at DrupalCamp South Carolina, which was hosted by the SouthEast LinuxFest. In the presentation I covered the components of a social network, why social networking is important, how social networking features will help your website succeed, and how to build a social network in Drupal. You can view and download my slides here.

This weekend Mediacurrent will be participating in the regionally popular open-source event called Southeast Linuxfest (SELF) held in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After hearing many requests, the organizers wanted to dedicate a full day (Sunday, June 13th) for just Drupal'ers.

The Drupal community is eagerly awaiting its newest release (version 7). At this point, the co-maintainers have held the position that Drupal 7 will be released "when it is ready" - in essence, when all the critical issues have been addressed. The list of remaining bugs can be found on
drupal.org under the contributor links in the right sidebar. This post will summarize some of the major differences one can expect to find in Drupal 7. To start with, the minimum server requirements for Drupal 7 will be PHP 5.2 and MySQL 5.0 (or PostgreSQL 8.3). In addition, the other highlights will include the following:

One of the over-riding goals of the Drupalcamp Atlanta organizers was to provide as much video footage of the event as possible in order to share back to the community at large.

Web video is here to stay. If your Drupal site's not using video now, you'll probably be implementing it very soon just to keep up with the Jones's. Navigating the vast landscape of web video terminology, best practices and hosting providers is its own project in and of itself. A Drupal site administrator that's taking on the task of implementing a suitable web video solution can quickly become overwhelmed. We've had the opportunity to work on several Drupal projects involving web video implementation. Here are several pieces of the video puzzle that should be considered before settling on a video solution.
Determine Your Bandwidth Needs
Bandwidth is the amount of data that will be transmitted to users' browsers.

Last weekend was the first ever Drupalcamp Atlanta, and I am proud to report that things went really well. As I write this, we've had 11 straight days of downpours in metro Atlanta and flooding throughout the city. As a result, we had a higher percentage of no-shows than we would have liked, but about 200 Drupal'ers braved the weather and made it out.
